1 st Conference of European Academy for Molecular Hydrogen Research in Biomedicine “Hydrogen for Biomedicine“
Ma Xuemei
Dr. Xuemei Ma received her BS from Shandong Unviersity and PhD of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Peking Union Medical College & Chinese Academy of Medical Science ( PUMC & CAMS). She worked as an Associate Professor at PUMC & CAMS, and as a faculty at National Engineering Research Center for Beijing Biochip Technology. Currently, She is a Professor of the Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Enviroment and Life, Beijing University of Technology at Beijjing, China. She is the Director of Beijing Molecular Hydrogen Research Center, Deputy director of Chinese Hydrogen Biomedical Society. Dr. Ma’s research interests focus on hydrogen biology, especially in the aspects of cancer, trauma, and mechanism. FROM ENERGY TO EVOLUTION: HYDROGEN METABOLISM IN EUKARYOTES Beijing University of Technology, Beijinng, China E-mail: xmma@bjut.edu.cn Life, including eukaryotes, comes from the hydrogen-rich ancient earth, must bear the imprint of "hydrogen". In our opinion, the role of hydrogen is likely to be multi-targets and based primarily on enzymatic reactions. Higher organisms might have the ability to metabolize hydrogen by hydrogenase. It is very attractive to explore whether cells have hydrogenase activity, that is, whether the cell preserve the ability to metabolize hydrogen. Mitochondria, cell membrane might have the enzyme activity of hydrogen metabolism, and ion channels are also seemly regulated by hydrogen. We believe that the role of hydrogen may due to the most basic biological process.
