V hornej časti námestia sa vypína Hodinová veža. Postavili ju okolo roku 1552, aby na nej umiestnili nové hodiny. Neskôr slúžila ako väznica a mučiareň. Pri poslednej prestavbe sa naklonila asi o 68 cm. Podľa legendy to spôso bila nočná zrážka anjelov, ktorí leteli okolo. V tme stratili orientáciu a za chytili sa o jej vrchol. Pred Hodinovou vežou stojí od 18. storočia Mariánsky stĺp nazývaný aj morový.

195) Hodinová veža

K atedrálu sv. Františka Xaverského sta vali jezuiti v pohnutých rokoch reformácie 1695 až 1715. Vypína sa na námestí ako verná kópia kostola Il Gesu v Ríme. Počas povstania Františka II. Rákócziho (1701 – 1709) ovládli mesto protestantskí vojaci, ktorí jezuitov vyhnali z mesta. Prá ce na kostole sa až do ich porážky museli prerušiť.

Prvými nájomníkmi boli samozrejme zlat níci. Ale od roku 1550 do budovy umiest nili pivovar a dokonca aj legendárnu krčmu „Proschoffszky Keller“ (Prošovskú pivnicu), aby boli zasadnutia mestskej rady veselšie.

In the upper part of the square looms the Clock tower. It was built around 1552 in order to house the new clock. Later it served as a prison and torture chamber. During the last serious reconstruction it tilted by about 68 cm. According to the legend, it was caused during the night by a collision of angels who were flying around. They lost orientation in the dark and snagged on its tip. Since the 18 th century in front of the clock tower the Marian column, called also the plague column, has stood. The construction of the St Francis Xavier Cathedral was started by Jesuits in the turbulent years of the Reformation between 1695 and 1715. It rises on the main square as a true copy of the Church of the Gesù in Rome. During the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi (1701 – 1709) the town was under the occupation of protestant soldiers who expelled the Jesuits from the city. The work on the church had to be interrupted until after their defeat. The building of the Town Hall on the main square was bought by the town for 500 guldens which was an unprecedented sum at that time. The enterprising city council immediately profited from its excellent location. A part of the building was leased to entrepreneurs. The first tenants were obviously goldsmiths. After 1550 the building hosted a brewery and a legendary tavern called the “Proschoffszky Keller” (Prošovská tavern) was located there, to make meetings of the city council merrier.

Im oberen Teil des Platzes befindet sich Hodinová veža (Uhrturm). Erbaut wurde er um das Jahr 1552, damit man auf ihm eine neue Uhr anbringen konnte. Das Gebäude beheimatete später ein

Gefängnis und eine Folterkammer. Beim letzten Umbau neigte er sich ungefähr um 68 cm. Der Legende nach wurde dies durch einen nächtlichen Zusammenprall zweier Engel verursacht. In der Dunkelheit verloren sie die Orientierung verloren und prallten gegen seine Spitze. Vor Hodinová veža steht ab dem 18. Jahrhundert Mariánsky stĺp, auch Pestsäule genannt. Die Kathedrale des Hl. Franz Xaver begannen die Jesuiten in den turbulenten Jahren der Reformation von 1695 bis 1715 zu bauen. Sie ragt am Hauptplatz heraus und ist eine treue Kopie der Kirche Il Gesù in Rom. Während des vom Franz II. Rákóczi (1701 – 1709) angeführten Aufstands wurde die Stadt von protestantischen Soldaten übernommen, die die Jesuiten aus der Stadt trieben. Die Arbeiten an der Kirche mussten bis zur Niederlage der Aufständischen eingestellt werden. Das Rathausgebäude hat die Stadt zu für damalige Zeit unglaubliche 500 Gulden gekauft. Der unternehmerische Stadtrat hat sofort dessen günstige Lage genützt. Einen Teil des Gebäudes vermietete sie an Unternehmer. Die ersten Mieter waren selbstverständlich Goldschmiede. Ab dem Jahr 1550 beheimatete das Gebäude jedoch eine Bierbrauerei und sogar die legendäre Kneipe „Proschoffszky Keller“ (Prošovská pivnica), um die Sitzungen des Stadtrates lustiger zu gestalten.
